A practical workshop outlining easy and affordable ways to reduce plastic in a range of hospitality settings
About this event
Greener Guest and its sister organisation Travel Without Plastic, have been working to reduce plastic waste in the hospitality industry since 2011. Workshop presenters Rachel McCaffery and Jo Hendrickx have a wealth of UK and international experience in sustainable hospitality and have worked with some of the best known UK and global brands, like Thomas Cook, Virgin Atlantic, Red Carnation Hotels, TUI, WWF Netherlands and The Apple Leisure Group in The Caribbean.
So much single-use plastic is used as a matter of course in hospitality and catering that trying to stem the tide can feel overwhelming. Rachel and Jo’s practical approach will show you that reducing plastic doesn’t have to be a headache. It also shouldn’t need to cost the earth or impact on customer satisfaction. Based on collaboration with one of the world’s leading Health and Safety companies, they’ll also focus on how you can reduce plastic , while maintaining hygiene standards and keeping customers safe.
In this workshop, we’ll share our 4-Step strategy to reducing single-use and share some of the innovative ways businesses are driving behaviour change to achieve plastic waste reductions and cost savings.
Consumers and businesses want change but are often confused by the huge variety of alternatives on offer, some of which aren’t as green as they seem. So we’ll help you to identify and avoid greenwash tactics, and give you the information you need to be able to make more informed purchasing decisions for your business.
We’ll look at how to maintain health and safety standards while still reducing plastic and finally, we’ll introduce you to some of our favourite leaders in the alternative products space that are not only helping hospitality businesses to reduce waste and costs, but to achieve significant steps towards NetZero goals too!
The workshop will primarily focus on waste issues relevant to the UK hospitality sector
The Agenda
- Busting some of the plastic and hygiene myths
- How to put processes over products to reduce unnecessary waste and cost
- Identifying pitfalls and misleading claims
- 4 strategic steps to single-use plastic reduction
- How to drive behaviour change with customers and staff
- Connecting you with suppliers of alternative solutions
- Live Q&A with the organisers

Description
Two years after the COVID-19 outbreak, European citizens are gradually beginning to feel more confident to travel again. As we confront new variants, however, the pandemic continues to raise concerns among travellers who are worried about their personal health and safety. Hence, rebuilding trust is crucial to get people travelling again. But, how can we achieve that?
While many initiatives have been implemented since the beginning of the crisis – including notably the European Commission’s COVID-19 Safety Seal label for tourism establishments – much more needs to be done. To discuss how to safely restore the confidence to travel for European travellers, the challenges ahead and possible solutions, we would like to invite you to a webinar on:
“Travelling in COVID times: how can transparency restore travellers’ confidence?”
which will take place on February 3 from 12:00 to 13:00 CET
This webinar will address some of the following questions: What instruments can ensure safe travelling? How can institutions regain people’s trust in the current and future travel environment? What kind of reassurances are travellers looking for? Will increased transparency restore travellers’ confidence? What role can distributors play, including online travel platforms?
Programme
Opening remarks by Emmanuel Mounier, Secretary General of eu travel tech
Debate moderated by Dave Keating, France 24
What role do tourism public officials have in restoring travellers’ confidence?
• Sandra Carvão, Chief Market Intelligence & Competitiveness, UNWTO
• Leonor Picão, Director responsible for the ‘Clean & Safe protocols’, Turismo de Portugal
How can private operators help to restore travellers’ confidence?
• Becky Foley, Global Trust and Safety, Tripadvisor
• Xavier Garcia, Innovation Director, Barcelona Hotel Association
Q&A session with all speakers
Wrap up and conclusions by MEP Josianne Cutajar
We would be delighted if you would join us for the debate. If you wish to register, please follow this If you wish to register, please follow this link.

OSW Tourism Ideas Lab session four explores how tourism businesses can take advantage of its COVID closures.
About this event
As difficult as COVID-19 closures have been, they also have a silver lining: A pause in operations provides a rare opportunity to take a step back, reflect and proactively plan for the future. Changes brought about by COVID require a choice to either emerge doing business as usual or adapt for a better future. This session explores how one tourism business took advantage of its COVID closure to reflect on their purpose, passions, partnerships and positioning, then invest in building back better for long-term returns. Tim Lucier will kick start the Ideas Lab conversation, sharing Northern Edge Algonquin’s evolutions during the pandemic to respond to visitor needs, evolve their product offer and build new and strengthen existing relationships, to stage their business for future success.
Tim is a creative go-getter and grounded leader with roots in transformational tourism and wellness. An advocate for trusting your intuition and developing core habits to pursue big dreams, he uses his passion for efficiency & organization and his keen eye for detail in all his work. As the Operations Director at Northern Edge Algonquin, Tim excels in creating one-of-a-kind, unplugged retreats featuring forest accommodations, delicious meals, and a variety of facilitated activities to empower transformational leadership and deep connection in our communities.
Note: This session has been changed to address the new COVID-19 restrictions.
As a reminder, these are not webinar sessions and everyone who registers is required to attend and participate. Please email emma@swotc.ca with any questions.
