Please join us for Part 3 of our Vaccine Webinar Series, “The Impact of the COVID-19 Vaccines on the Hospitality Industry.”
Webinar Focus: Please join us for a roundtable discussion about the legal considerations surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine in the hospitality industry. The discussion will be led by attorney Martin Siegel, chair of the COVID-19 Response Service Team. He will be accompanied by partner Derek Dissinger, chair of the Hospitality Industry Group, and partner Joshua Schwartz, member of the Employment Practice Group.
The three attorneys will talk about some of the specific challenges the hospitality industry faces when it comes to the COVID-19 vaccine becoming available. Some of the questions they will discuss are: Can employers mandate some or all of its employees to get vaccinated? Can companies (restaurants, hotels, event venues) require proof of vaccination before allowing patrons to enter its facility or access certain amenities/areas? Can employers incentivize employees to get vaccinated? Can companies require employees and/or patrons to sign a waiver of liability if they decide not to receive the vaccination? How can following current mitigation measures help to minimize liability?
We hope you can join us for this timely and relevant discussion!

David Carruthers, your host for this masterclass, spent 12 years as an entrepreneur, building a multiple business & property group, becoming a multi-millionaire within 5 years.
At the 5 year point, David took his family for a 3-month trip around Europe, running his business remotely having built a leadership team and systems that enabled him to do this.
He was also elected by his peers to be president of a business chamber for 4 years and later, founding president of a tourism association for 2 years. He helped countless business owners move forward and grow their businesses in these voluntary roles.
Before his entrepreneurial period, he worked in large multi-site groups in the UK (2500-4500 venue companies) in senior roles including being headhunted from London to Melbourne as CEO of what would become Australia’s second-largest hospitality group, building it from scratch as a subsidiary of one of Australia’s largest corporates.
David has over 30 years of demonstrated success in big business and SMEs. He brings together a unique mix of skills, knowledge & experience, especially in leadership, strategy, systems & wellbeing.
He learnt about wellbeing when he lost his! 5 hospitalisations in 12-months cost him about $10m and almost cost him his life. It took him 2-3 years to refill his health & wellbeing cup.
He now dedicates his time to helping hospitality business owners/CEOs…
“the first 100-days is critical to ‘turning the oil tanker around’ and enabling you to move forward, into (greater) profit with one eye on your own wellbeing”
During this masterclass, David will show you his 7-Step process to Create Profitable Happiness…

Before the pandemic, the idea of the “connected trip” was widely discussed in the travel industry.
At Ingenico, we define the connected trip as a concept that “connects” all travel bookings and experiences into one digital flow and creates simple and convenient enhancement of traveling using digital devices and technologies.
The market is becoming smaller, but the hopes for recovery are strong and supported by the positive roll out of the COVID-19 vaccines.
Designing the best offline and online travel experience will be the holy grail for the travel industry in 2021.
Join this webinar with experts from Ingenico and Destinia to learn about:
- Is the idea of the “connected trip” still relevant in 2021?
- Convenient payment experience as a catalyst of successful customer obsession.
- Data and fraud: what to look at and industry best practices.
The webinar will be broadcast at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2021.
Speakers:
- Ricardo Fernandez Flores, managing director at Destinia Group.
- Eric Liebman, head of travel at Ingenico.

Agritourism around the US—Findings from a National Survey of Farms Open to Visitors for Education, Entertainment, Recreation, Hospitality and Product Sales
- Presented by Lisa Chase, Dee Singh-Knights, and Penny Leff (see bios below)
- January 28, 2021 at 10:00 p.m.
- Registration is required. Register here.
A multi-state team of extension specialists and researchers conducted a national survey in 2019 of farms, ranches, and vineyards open to visitors for any reason, including farm stands, u-pick, overnight stays, tastings, events, community supported agriculture (CSA), tours, hunting, etc. Survey questions included products and experiences offered, motivations, challenges, support systems, profitability measures, and plans for the future. We received 1834 responses representing all 50 states.
During this webinar, members of the team will share the survey findings with a focus on regional differences across the US. They’ll also address questions about the results and share ideas for translating the findings into Extension programming to support agritourism during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
About the presenters:
- Lisa Chase, Director of the Vermont Tourism Research Center and Extension Professor at the University of Vermont. Her research and outreach focus on the intersection of food systems, community vitality, and working landscapes. During the past 18 years, she has worked with farmers and food entrepreneurs throughout Vermont and around the world. She is the conference chair of the International Workshop on Agritourism, which will be held in Burlington, Vermont in August 2021. Before moving to Vermont in 2002, Lisa conducted research and outreach in Colorado, New York, Costa Rica and Ecuador, among other places.
- Dee Singh-Knights, Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design at West Virginia University. While Dee’s research and teaching interests are broad (agribusiness economics and management, risk management and business planning, local foods initiatives, and holistic planning for small farms), she believes that agritourism represent an enormous opportunity to increase access to locally and regionally produced agricultural products, and to develop new market opportunities for farm operations serving local and expanded markets. Dee has worked extensively with partners in WV over the last five years to start the WV Agritourism Initiative, a business planning and risk management program for individuals wanting to add an agritourism operation to their existing farms. Dee’s aim is to help operators seamlessly integrate agritourism into their farming operations and manage the resultant business risks, in order to harness the viable opportunities presented by both the agriculture and tourism industries while minimizing negative impacts on the farm.
- Penny Leff, Agritourism Coordinator with the University of California Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program in the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. She has coordinated UC statewide agritourism support for more than ten years, organizing agritourism training, planning, promotion and collaboration activities with UC Cooperative Extension and agricultural organizations throughout California. She manages online communication with the California agritourism community and a directory promoting CA agritourism operations to the public. Penny lives in Sacramento and enjoys working with the different agritourism associations and independent operators across the state.

“Everyone has a plan ’till they get punched in the mouth.”
-Mike Tyson
I guess it’s fair to say that most of us felt (or still feel) like 2020 has beaten us up. Calling this year a “challenging year” seems like an understatement.
All of a sudden, we lost our jobs, saw our businesses struggle, and watched as the whole world tried to understand how to fix the damage. We all had our share of frustration and sadness over the past months.
We all needed to adapt, reinvent ourselves, and get a plan B (or C). It was just not possible to continue doing life as normal. 2020 was like Tyson punching us!
Therefore, the last Hotel Cast TV episode of the year is about the hospitality professionals that changed jobs, companies, job positions, business strategies or moved on to a completely new path. They really put up a fight!
Most importantly, they always kept their spirit up (as much as possible), helping others, and finding ways to improve their skills. They kept going.
So it’s a true pleasure for me, Paula, to have these people on the show. I asked them to share their top lessons learned in 2020 and I’m sure they will inspire and motivate you. Here they are:
- Amy Brandford: Regional Sales Manager (UK) for GuestRevu. Amy loves to connect with hoteliers and hospitality professionals and stay up-to-speed with latest trends concerning direct feedback and online reputation management.
- Calvin Stovall: Chief Experience Officer of ICONIC Presentations, LLC. With over 25 years of experience in hospitality, marketing, and branding, he led the marketing and public relations for more than 150 Homewood Suites, and earned numerous accolades, as the VP of Brand Marketing with Hilton Worldwide.
- Cristal Bukler: Strategic Partnership Manager at Asksuite. Cristal is a Hospitality Specialist transitioning to Software Development with a focus on humanizing tech.
- David Arraya: General Manager at Auberge Resorts and Collection. Global and charismatic hospitality leader, David inspires humans to think, learn, and lead, narrowing the gap between leaders and managers.
- Paula Carreirão: Content Manager at Asksuite and Hospitality Expert. Having worked as a hotelier for over 7 years, from front desk agent to General Manager, she now enjoys creating content about hospitality, technology, and artificial Intelligence in the hotel industry in blogs, podcasts, and webinars.
Even if the battle isn’t over yet, we need to remind ourselves that it will be someday. So, for now, it’s a great opportunity to grow in many areas of our lives. Let’s get ready for what 2021 has in store for us.
Be inspired to keep going or make the changes you are struggling to overcome.
We are in this together!

This webinar will feature the participation of the DESTIMED PLUS project, from our Sustainable Tourism Community. Mauro Randone and Luca Santarossa will present the main components for a governance system in Mediterranean protected areas through the Mediterranean Ecotourism Destination, developed in the framework of this project bringing together 9 Mediterranean regions to develop and promote ecotourism in their protected areas.
This webinar will therefore be an occasion to build the resilience of the tourism sector and allow DESTIMED PLUS project to share its inputs on conservation, climate adaptation and destination management aspects.

What does a sustainable future for our heritage look like?
About this Event
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the blueprint to guide towards a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face: poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.
As H.E Yasmine Fouad, Minster of Environmental Affairs in Egypt, commented when she visited the Shali restoration project in Siwa, Egypt, last month:
“Connecting people with each other is key for human development, connecting people with nature is essential for natural resource preservation, but connecting people with each other and with nature, is the foundation for sustainable development. We are all meeting here today to make Siwa a world-acclaimed ecotourism destination where the local community and travellers can share the rewards of sustainable living.”
This webinar series was inspired by insights from the Shali restoration and revival project; and opportunities in digital heritage for creating new partnerships and collaborations. The webinar series over the last few months has brought together more than 260 heritage activists, practitioners, teachers and students, from 32 countries. This webinar will explore ideas beyond the restoration and revival programme, and digital documentation, to explore the opportunity to learn from one another around the world about sustaining heritage; and using the SDGs as a common framework for sharing those experiences. In doing so we aim to to improve livelihoods and the resilience of communities that are stewards of those vitally important heritage sites.
All the case studies are from countries that traditionally have been dependent on tourism. Worldwide, tourism provides livelihoods for millions of people and allows billions more to appreciate their own and different cultures, as well as the natural world. For some countries, it can represent over 20% of their GDP and, overall, it is the third largest export sector of the global economy.
But tourism is one of the sectors most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting economies, livelihoods, public services and opportunities on all continents. While sustaining the livelihoods dependent on the sector must be a priority, rebuilding tourism is also an opportunity for building back better, through innovation, digitalization, sustainable practices, and partnerships.
With support from the European Union, the Cultural Heritage Institute of the Royal Agricultural University, 4DHeritage, CILL and EQI; we will be bringing together panellists from across Europe and Africa to explore how the Sustainable Development Goals have inspired and framed approaches to promoting the sustainability agenda along with heritage conservation and tourism.
Panellists include:
• Dr Laura Basell and Prof Mark Horton who will be talking about the Pwani initiative in East Africa to address the challenges facing maritime heritage with a focus on the island of Pemba
• Abdalla Baghy, Siwan, ex adviser to the Ministry of Education and farmer; in conversation with Nicholas Mellor. They will discuss how the the SDGs can highlight the challenges facing the Siwans, and the parallels between desert and maritime heritage conservation.
• Dr Colin MacDonald will be talking about the challenges of intensive tourism and sustainability in the site of Knossos, Greece.
Chair:
• Malak Elkhadem, EQI Egypt
There will be opportunity for audience Q&A as part of the event; should you wish to submit a question ahead of time please email the team on Nicholas.Mellor@LSNgroup.org
The historic oasis of Siwa, now threatened by the salination of the soil, dwindling water supplies and encroachment from the desert and development
The Swahil coast in East Africa – whose heritage sites are of global significance, but now face challenges from climate change and economic stress exacerbated by the Coronavirus outbreak.
The Minoan Palace at Knossos is one of the most visited cultural landmarks in the world. The palace and its sister sites across Crete were the centres of European culture since before 2800 B.C..
Whereas today the sheer footprint of tourism is a challenge on the site, it’s location meant that sustainability needed to be incorporated in very design, illustrated by its approach to water management and ventilation.
